During last night’s emergency session of parliament, both the Liberals and the NDP adopted the position espoused by the Green Party and the Bloc: that the government of Canada should send a clear message of support to the pro-democracy demonstrators within in Egypt that President Hosni Mubarak should step aside right now. The Obama administration appears to have adopted this position last night, but here in Canada, the ruling Conservatives still can’t bring themselves to come out on the side of democracy, which would have been the right thing to do before the violence erupted yesterday.

I suspect that Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon will eventually announce our government’s shift in position, especially since it now seems that Mubarak’s own Party has started to turn on him. Earlier today, the Egyptian Prime Minister announced a public apology to the protesters for the violence, saying that it should not have happened. He also said that he’d get to the bottom of how it happened. To me, that clearly means that he believes that Mubarak’s secret police thugs instigated the violence, likely using the same social media tools which originally assisted pro-democracy protesters, as the internet was suddenly turned back on for some unknown reason following Mubarak’s televised address, and about 6 hours before pro-Mubarak demonstrators were bussed into the square.

Mubarak’s days are clearly numbered. Canada will eventually catch up and do the right thing. Had western leaders been more pro-active in their support of those Egyptian protesters calling for democracy within Egypt, might have Mubarak’s response on Tuesday night been different, and might the violence we’ve seen these past few days have been averted? We’ll never know. But there is a good argument to suggest that doing the right thing is never wrong. In this case, the right thing should have been for our government (and others) to come out clearly on the side of democracy.Sudbury Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03959184192546029807noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8120982399236985142.post-38739456999305260042011-02-01T16:19:26.513-05:002011-02-01T16:19:26.513-05:00Nuts. Egyptians have been saying that they won't disperse for anything less than his immediate resignation. This situation could go sideways really quickly now, and there's a significant risk for more violence throughout the night (it's almost midnight in Cairo as I write this).Sudbury Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03959184192546029807noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8120982399236985142.post-23576881742462277342011-02-01T11:57:05.996-05:002011-02-01T11:57:05.996-05:00Some of you are ridiculous

I sent a letter to my MP stating almost ...EXACTLY!

I sent a letter to my MP stating almost the identical sentiments an hour ago. All Canadians who support freedom and democracy and human rights should do the same. The level of cowardice or representatives, our government in the face of the obvious desires of the people of Egypt is shameful.M Williams, ON, Canadanoreply@blogger.com
